Women and Minorities

For a long time, engineering has been considered to be a prerogative of white males. Nowadays the situation has changed for the better but the industry still needs development and support as for minorities. As for female engineers, their number is growing.

Specialization

There are seven major subgroups in civil engineering and they are closely connected with each other.

Structural

Structural engineers have to face challenges and responsibility of planning constructions able to fight the majority of natural phenomena and disasters. Offshore structures, buildings, bridges, etc. are included into this list. In this branch of engineering you will deal with various combinations of steel, concrete, plastic and so on.

Environmental

This branch of engineering is getting more and more popular as the humanity starts to understand the need to protect fragile natural resources. Environmental engineers deal with waste and waste-water disposal, remove hazardous elements from air. The scope of your duties may include providing safe drinking water, cleaning the contaminated sites, managing solid wastes.

Geotechnical

Geotechnical engineering is closely interconnected with civil engineering as the majority of projects are supported by the ground. Your area of activity may include some underground projects like tunnels, foundations, and offshore platforms. You will analyze the quality of soil and rock these buildings and constructions will base on. You will have to take into account the structure of slopes and fills, the affect of ground water and consequences of natural disasters like earthquake. Besides, there is also a possibility you will have to deal with the construction of dams, retaining walls and embankments.
