Licensing
Every state in the USA has a number of laws regulating the activity of representatives of such occupations as law, medicine, and engineering. These laws are necessary to protect public health and welfare as well as to show that a person possessing a definite license has a certain amount of knowledge and meets the requirements of competence, ability, experience and character. If you are going to be an expert in engineering, as a rule you will have to take a written exam at the end of the course to get the license and show that you really able to work according to the occupation you've chosen.
Graduate School
Graduate schools are not the only way to move forward, you may still consider attending the courses that will help you to get the knowledge you lack. To choose the right school, you may consult your professors and engineers.
