Water Resources

Water is an indispensable part of our life and being a water resources engineer, you will handle the issues of water quality and quantity. You will be responsible for prevention of floods, water supply for cities, industries and irrigation. Besides, you will deal with wastewater, protect beaches or manage and redirect rivers. Apart from this, you will also have to design and support hydroelectric power stations as well as canals, pipelines, etc.

Transportation

Being a transportation engineer, you will be busy with designing, construction and support of all kinds of transportation means and facilities on land, air and sea. Apart from this, your duties will include improvement and control over existing traffic and transit system and also creation and development of new ways of transportation.

Construction

Construction engineers build our future. When the project is being realized, it means it is being constructed. I.e., your job is the first result of what designing engineers have done. Your technical knowledge as well as your management skills will give you an opportunity to turn the projects into reality within time limits and budget.

Urban Planning

Engineers dealing with urban planning handle the development of the community as such. Namely the representatives of this branch of engineering project streets, parks and recreation areas. Very often you will have to communicate with authorities and demonstrate your technical knowledge.

Earnings

Speaking about the profit you will get, it's a relative issue. When it comes to your salary you should remember that it is your working environment and the satisfaction you get from your work that should matter. But as in any other field of activity, the salary often matches the range of your duties.

Salary Data

Speaking about entry level salaries you may count on, it usually bases on your working experience, education, location, size and specific field of activity. Thus for instance, entry salary of civil engineers may vary from $48,509 (Bachelor's degree) to $62,275 (PhD).

Employer Size

The size of your potential employer is of paramount importance as your salary will directly depend on it. Thus, bigger companies offer better salaries but your movement up the career ladder may be much harder. On the contrary, the salary is not very high in smaller companies but your career growth is sure to be much easier.

Location

It's natural that location comes to the forth when it comes to salary. Earnings in rural areas are lower than in cities but in this case you should bear in mind the cost of living.
